How many students are likely to have usage bills for exceeding 15 Gigabytes per month?
Based on network usage statistics gathered for the 2008-2009 academic year, during which the student billing threshold was 10 Gigabytes, approximately 14% of students, on average, generated more than 10 Gigabytes of Internet traffic per month. These figures include all students, both those living on-campus and those living off-campus (but using Wi-Fi network service somewhere on campus). This means that more than 80% of students will normally have no usage-based charges in an average month. NUBB usage does tend to be higher for students living on campus since they do not have a separate Internet service provider at an off-campus residence (but even amongst just on-campus residents, a majority do not exceed the billing threshold). For students who had usage charges (during the 2008-2009 academic year), the average monthly usage bill was around $14.50. When averaged against all students using the network, including the 80+% who did not exceeding the billing threshold, the average monthly
