How many start-up companies has the computer science department created?
The department has spurred four startups. I’d like to focus more on private sector collaboration, which provides research money to UTD, helps faculty and students with their research and has the potential to raise the department’s profile. Secondly, I want to increase our software licensing and commercialization of technology developed by department faculty and students. How much annual research funding does your department receive? Last year, we received about $9 million. I would like to see funding double. Do you have any entrepreneurial experience? Ideas I developed in the lab have been spun into two companies. I co-founded Interoperate.biz in Richardson in March 2008 to develop a method to translate outdated software to modern versions. I co-founded Plano-based Logisoft Solutions in 2002 to develop software to help blind people study mathematics. How much funding have you received? I’ve received nearly $15 million for research and teaching in the last 17 years. This fall, the Texas
