How Many Species Of Gazelle Are There?
The gazelle is an antelope of the genus Gazella and of the family Bovidae which also includes animals like cattle, sheep and bison among others. There are 13 species of gazelles existing in the world today while the Arabian gazelle, Red gazelle and Queen of Sheba’s gazelle are the species of gazelle that have become extinct. Most of the species like Thomson’s gazelle, Speke’s gazelle, Soemmerring’s gazelle, Red-fronted Gazelle, Rhim gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, Dama gazelle and Cuvier’s gazelle are found in the grassland and savanna regions of Africa. Other species like the Chinkara, Dorcas gazelle, Mountain gazelle, Saudi gazelle and the Persian gazelle are found in various parts across Asia from the Middle East and Central Asia to South Asia. However there are various theories regarding the classification of the species and sub species of the genus Gazella and taxonomists differ on several issues based on external characteristics of each species.
