How many species of fishes occur in Australian waters?
About 4,500 species are currently recognised from Australian waters. This is among the largest for any similar sized region in the world. It should be noted, however, that the Australian region encompasses a highly diverse range of habitats compared to other areas and includes both tropical and temperate climatic conditions.
