How many sets of boots do I need and how effective are the issued Bates?
You will need at least 2 pairs of boots. The Bates boots that you were issued at the Naval Academy have some shortfalls, specifically poor ankle support and a sole that makes it difficult to climb a rope. However, these boots can serve a purpose–you would just have to apply some judgment in deciding for which evolutions you will wear them. For some people the poor ankle support and sole will not be an issue. For others, if nothing else, the Bates issued boots could serve as a clean, dry, polished pair of boots that you are able to put on to go to the classroom after having trashed another pair of boots at PT.
