I was raised on a farm so I started helping when I was very young. Gathering eggs, feeding the chickens, going out in the field and herding the sheep and goats all by the time I was six or seven. When I was eleven or twelve I started milking the cow and my sister, three years my senior, handled straining the milk and putting it in the ice box. This was all in Texas but from time to time, in the winter, milking was a pretty cold and uncomfortable job. That cow, Old Bossy, never took the day off so she had to be milked every morning and every evening. There were always other chores that needed to be tended to so early mornings before the school bus came at ten minutes after seven in the mornings I could be found outside taking care of things with Dad. Evenings, the bus dropped me off at the front gate again and then until dark I was busy milking and gathering eggs and feeding chickens, sheep, goats, pigs etc. When we had orphan lambs and kids we took some of the warm, fresh milk after mi
