How many senators are there in each state?
Each state in the Union has 2 Senators. There are 50 states, hence the 100 members of Senate. The senior-most member of the majority party in the Senate becomes the Senator Pro Tempore, and he presides over the Senate, with the exception of when the Vice President presides. The Great Compromise set up the system where the upper house of Congress (the Senate) has 2 Representatives for each state, while the lower house of Congress (the House of Representatives) has the number of representatives set by population, with at least one representative per state. The number of Representatives in the House was set to 435. There was only one time when there was more, with 436 members, which took place when Alaska joined the Union. When the next census took place, the number was reapportioned and set to 435 once again. Hope that helps.
