How many roads must a man walk down before he knows he is a man?
(submitted by Abz) Answer: I have pondered this question applying deep concentration and have struggled to find a connection between recognition of one’s affirmed masculinity and walking down roads. Tricky. The link is journey; the journey to manhood. Perambulating the highways and byways is a metaphor. Walking suggests that it is a journey made alone and the roads symbolise the path one takes through life. Each junction is an important decision (or turning point). Given that I have worked out exactly what is being asked and am obviously not expected to respond with a number I must look to the wording and use of metaphor to decide how best to describe all men’s journey to adulthood. The best metaphor I could think of was that you can count the roads but you only know you’re a man when you get to go offroad dirtbiking on the heath. Roar. Oh it works on so many levels.
