How many records can ADE work with in a file?
The difinitive answer is that it depends. There are really two limits to the amount of records you can work with in ADE. The first is the physical limit. It is based upon how much memory and disk space your computer has. With ADE versions 3 & 4 all of the records are stored in your computers RAM as you work on a file. With virtual memory (using hard drive space as memory) you are limited to the amount of RAM and disk space you have available, thus it varies with the machine. To correct problems associated with virtual memory you can try increasing the minimum amount of disk space set aside for virtual memory or quit other programs while working in ADE with large files. The second or realistic limit is when the operating system has to spend so much time “swapping” data between the hard drive and memory that the computer runs painfully slow. ADE 2 does not depend so heavily upon your system’s memory, instead it uses hard drive space. The amount of records you can work with in ADE 2 there
