How many reactor accidents have taken place in the world? How many died due to the accidents?
Accidents in any industry elicits anxiety and concern among the members of the public. Though serious accidents in nuclear power plants resulting in the release of large quantities of radioactive materials are extremely improbable, the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl shook the confidence of the public. Specialists from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), have formulated the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) of incidents and accidents at nuclear power plants into perspective explaining in simple terms their significance and relative importance. AERB will be the nodal agency to implement the programme INES can facilitate a common understanding between the nuclear community, the media and the public. The participating countries have adopted the concept. The scale may be revised in the light of feedback from the nuclear community and media and public. The INES does not replace the criteria already adopted nationally and internationally to r
