It is impossible to give a definite answer to this, as some incidents go unreported, others will be reported but denied by the alleged perpetrator and never proven one way or the other. In the 2008/09 season there were 36 arrests for racist chanting at football matches in England and Wales, a rise from the previous season’s tally of 23, which was the lowest on record. In the 2006-07 season, there were 41 arrests for racist chanting, and in 2005-06 there were 55 arrests. In the 2004-05 season, 51 people were arrested for racist chanting , down from 63 in the 2003-04 season, 74 in 2002-03, 46 in 2001-02 and 82 in 2000-2001.
