How Many Rabbit Skins were Needed?
Rabbit fur robes were mainly used as kids robes and robes for women. Even though rabbits were commonly hunted by all Indian tribes they required close to fifty rabbit skins to make childrens clothes. For a womans’ robe 100 rabbit skins were needed. Only amongst Indian tribes in the Great Basin were rabbit fur robes common amongst the men due to the lack of larger game in the deserts and hills. For the mens robes well over 100 rabbit skins were required, far too many for most Native Americans to consider using. How Native Americans made Rabbit Fur Robes The method for preparing the rabbit skins was time consuming but it was used with only minor changes by all the Native Americans. After skinning the rabbit, the inside of the rabbit pelt was carefully cleaned, due to the thin rabbit skin this was difficult. Then after cleaning the rabbit pelt was cut in a spiral pattern, making a single long strip of fur approximately half an inch to an inch thick. This strip of rabbit fur was partially
