The Shih Tzu is a small ‘toy dog’ which has Eastern origins and is sometimes called the Small Lion or Chrysanthemum Dog. The average litter size is 5, but it could have 6 or 7, or conversely 3-4, since the figure of five is the average number. The Shih Tzu is a dog which does not have fur, but is long haired and many shed their hair frequently, so if you are considering having a dog of this type, then you need to be prepared to vacuum regularly. The average life span of the Shih Tzu is 9-15 years but many can be pronne to some respitary problems throughout their later years. However, on the plus side, because they are so small, they are relatively cheap to feed. A good ‘quality’ puppy will cost between £400-550 although there are many available from Rescue Shelters.
