How many public-private partnerships for water and wastewater systems exist in the United States?
According to Public Works Financing, there were an estimated 1,955 public-private partnerships in the United States in 2006 – an increase of five percent from the previous year. Yet, these numbers only reflect a portion of the actual market as smaller operators engaged in public-private partnerships are not included in the study. Severn Trent Services serves as the private partner for 22 percent of all such partnerships in the United States. At the 2007 Congress of Cities held in New Orleans, La., the Water Partnership Council hosted a workshop where six municipal leaders shared their personal stories on public-private partnerships in the water and wastewater industry.
