How many Pontiac 1979 firebird Formulas with T-tops were made?
Pi is mistaken – None of the 1979 Firebirds had Hurst t-tops, but of course that doesn’t matter. I agree, though, I would not believe Big D, because the DMV doesn’t have any idea how many cars have t-tops or sunroofs. That body style wasn’t assigned unique style numbers based on the roof in 1979. The information simply doesn’t exist in the hands of the government. I have never seen any published numbers from Pontiac that break down Formulas by roof. The Trans Am numbers have been published based on that, but not Formulas. So any answer you find on the internet, I would not believe it at all. If you call 1-800-PM-Cares, Pontiac’s customer service might tell you. Sometimes they answer questions like that.
As already stated the Hurst T-Tops were replaced in 1978 by the larger Fisher T-Tops. These looked just like the Hurst T-Tops only they were larger. There was an aftermarket company that installed a larger more square top that looks similar to the 80’s style T-Tops but this was not factory. I believe the company was called Cars and Concepts or something like that. The fact that the original engine is gone really does hurt the “rareness” of your car. I would nonetheless check some of the Trans Am web pages as a lot of them also have some good Formula and base Firebird information on them.
