How many people operate a dredger?
To operate a dredger in automation mode, the machine is primarily manned by two people. Basically one operator drives and programs the machine using a “cruise control” mechanism while the other crew member provides support by operating the bulldozer, conducting plant inspections and resetting safety or operational devices that may have been activated. The two operators swap roles half way through the 12-hour shift for job rotation and safety purposes. Essentially when a machine operates in the automation mode it does not require an operator to man the loading unit of the machine. The loading unit is monitored by sensors to ensure the coal loads onto the face conveyor correctly. A system of cameras and monitors in the driver’s cabin of the digging unit enable the dredger driver to ensure the machine operates safely and efficiently. This system has worked well and has been accepted by the operators as it makes their job more interesting using new technology in the mining application. For
