How many people have HIV or AIDS in California, and Palo Alto and East Palo Alto specifically?
In 2005, there were 3,615 new cases of HIV reported in California. Experts estimate about 10,000 people in California are infected but do not know it. Due to a recent federal regulation change, however, there are no current, accurate statistics on HIV. The change required that all cases must be reported by name, rather than by code, so beginning in April 2006, California reports only HIV cases linked to a name, which is only a fraction of the actual number of cases. AIDS statistics have always been reported by name, though, so they are accurate. In Palo Alto, at least 48 men and about nine women are living with AIDS. At least 150 people have HIV. In East Palo Alto, 72 people are living with AIDS and several hundred, at least, are infected with HIV.
