How many people died from the black plague?
Because there were several different outbreaks and because it is not certain whether the black plague was a single illness or several illnesses occurring at the same time it is difficult to know the exact number. One estimate is that 150 million – 220 million people died worldwide in the pandemic occurring between 1346 and 1351. Since the population of the world was only about 500 million at that time that is a significant number.
