How Many People Die From Drunk Driving Every Year?
Drunk driving is no accident. There were 16,885 alcohol-related fatalities in 2005 – 39 percent of the total traffic fatalities for the year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “A motor vehicle crash is considered to be alcohol-related if at least one driver or non-occupant (such as a pedestrian or pedalcyclist) involved in the crash is determined to have had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01 gram per deciliter (g/dL) or higher. Thus, any fatality that occurs in an alcohol-related crash is considered an alcohol-related fatality. The term ‘alcohol-related’ does not indicate that a crash or fatality was caused by the presence of alcohol.” Note the last paragraph, and in particular, the last sentence. This would seem to make the statistics below a little misleading since we tend to think that alcohol-related crashes are caused by drunk drivers. But if a sober driver kills an alcohol-impaired pedestrian, it’s still considered an alcohol-relate
Yet there is no call to make cars or alcohol illegal. Both could be done without, especially alcohol. Start with the high-capacity killers and then we’ll talk about guns. 9 July 2007 at 9:14 p.m. Suggest removal Permalink Marion (Marion Lynn) says… If any of the anti-gunners take the time to read this link, the emergency room may fill up with them as they wil suffer various forms of apoplexy and other similar maladies. On about the same par as quilting shows and Klingon Empire gatherings. You go ahead, though. I think gun shows are just fine… as long as GCA1968 is full observed, and implemented as strongly as possible. 🙂 Agnostick agnostick@excite.com http://www.uscentrist.org 10 July 2007 at 6:11 a.m. Suggest removal Permalink Marion (Marion Lynn) says… This is just TOO rich!
Yeah. It’s a big number. By telling your children that “Oh no marijuana is sooooo horrible!” you’re just making them want to try it even more. Don’t be a hypocrite. If you grew up in the 60s and 70s I bet you’ve tried numerous types of drugs. Kids are going to make their own choices and deal with the consequences. You can only hold on for so long before you have to let them burn their own bridges. I swear, people are so uptight when raising their kids. KIDS MAKE MISTAKES JUST LIKE YOU DID AT THEIR AGE. I wish everyone could take some advice from my parents because they’ve always let me make my own choices and I’ve turned out to be a great young adult. If you’re going to treat your children like you’re their owner they will lose all respect for you and just defy you even more. It’s amazing how ignorant people become as they get older.
