How many people did Queen Elizabeth I have executed during her reign?
I don’t know if a complete list exists. Executions were pretty common in Tudor England. However, Elizabeth was excommunicated from the Catholic church in April of 1570. The intention of the excommunication was to let her Catholic subjects know that it was OK to overthrow her. The religous tolerance Elizabeth showed in the first 11 years of her reign began to change, as more and more Catholics became involved in plots to usurp or murder her. The “rightful” queen according to the Catholics was the imprisoned Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots). At the time of the excommunication Mary was age 27 and shortly to become a widow for the 3rd time. ——— Here is a partial list of about 30 people (most of them Catholic).
