How many people are waiting for transplants?
In Canada, there are over 4,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant at any one time and approximately 300 more are waiting for other vital organ transplants. In Manitoba, there are about 150 people ready and waiting for a kidney transplant at any one time and approximately another 200 people in the process of being evaluated for transplant. While people waiting for kidney transplant are often on dialysis, people waiting for other vital organs do not have an option of artificial support for their failing organ. For some of these people, a transplant will not come in time and they will die waiting. Approximately 20-30 per cent of people waiting will die before an organ becomes available.
