How many people are in detention in and around Los Angeles?
In the Los Angeles region: * Approximately 2,000 men are held in ICE custody at the Mira Loma Detention Center in Lancaster, CA (about 1.5 hours from downtown LA); * About 200-300 men and women in removal proceedings are held in ICE-rented beds at the Santa Ana City Jail; * In the short-term (less than 24 hour) holding and processing center “B18” in the downtown Los Angeles federal building, there are 5 large holding cells which can hold variable numbers of people; and * … ICE is in the process of issuing a federal call for contracts to construct a new ~ 2,500 bed facility in the region. * NOTE: if ICE doesn’t have enough room to house people who have been apprehended in the Los Angeles area (or if they cannot house them in LA for another reason), ICE will transport them to detention centers in other regions, including San Diego, Arizona and Texas. o ICE will make the decision for where someone is to be detained without consideration for where that person’s family may be located, and h
