Yearly cases of meningococcal disease have been decreasing since the high rates of the 1990s. In 2004, there were 342 cases notified, in 2005 228 cases, in 2006 160 cases, and the provisional total for 2007 is 108. Before the epidemic began, there were about 50 cases of meningococcal disease per year.The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) collects information on notified cases of meningococcal disease, results of which are published on ESR’s website.
