how many people/analysts are in the U.S. intelligence community?
http://www.intelligence.gov/1-members.shtml defines the US intelligence community as comprising 18 agencies. For the sake of this question, let me estimate the size of the intelligence community by defining it as the minimum of CIA + FBI + NSA. There are 15 additional agencies. The pure intelligence component of each of these agencies varies; e.g., the US State Dept is one of the agencies of the 18. CIA = $27B + 135,000e employees FBI = $ 6B + 30,485 employees NSA= $ 6Be + 30,000 employees TOTALS = $40Be + 195,500e employees Note: when an “e” follows a figure, the actual number is classified; but, it is my crude estimate based on FBI budget/headcount ratios; NSA=NSA+CSS (Central Security Service); see below for sources of these data It would be absurd to take these data on these 3 agencies x 6 to estimate the total for the 18 agencies. The actual number is likely above my figure and less than 6 times that figure.
Approximately 100,000; according to Ambassador John D. Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence in 2006, September interview with Chris Matthews, MSNBC Sources: http://www.dni.gov/interviews/20060911_interview.
