how many patients with an STD are cured by health services?
GROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Mwanza trial found a 40% reduction in the incidence of HIV due to an intervention to improve case detection and management of STD’s. This study aims at assessing the proportion of STD cases occurring in the community that are cured by public health services in Mwanza Region after the intervention and to compare this with the situation before the intervention. METHODS: As a framework for the study we used a simple linear model, which describes the different steps STD patients pass through before they can be considered cured. These steps include awareness of the infection; care seeking; diagnosis by the health worker; prescription and reception of medication; efficacy of the treatment; compliance with the treatment, cure. The product of the proportions of patients that proceed from one step to the next gives an estimate of the cure rate achieved by the health services. With this model and with data from previously published studies as well as data from studies
