How many older adults are misusing substances?
According to a Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS) 2005 report older adults (age 55 and over) accounted for 10% of substance abuse related hospitalizations and inpatient treatment (source). The primary drug abused remains alcohol though a substantially higher rate of illicit drug abuse (drugs that are currently illegal such as marijuana, cocaine, and LSD) are expected to rise as the baby boom generation reaches older adulthood.
