How many of the donated cars actually go to low-wage families?
In essence there are 3 different types of cars that are donated to us. 1. Keepers – A car in good condition that can be repaired and put in very good condition for under $850 (our cost). This is a car our experts feel will provide at least 2 years 24,000 miles of reliable service for our recipients. 100% of these cars are provided to one of our worthy families. This is typically 1 in 3.8 of all donations. 2. Cars that do not meet our reliability standards. These cars are sold outright. 100% of the proceeds are used to prepare cars for our worthy families. These funds along with the funds from our retail lot, Freedom Wheels, generate 30% or our operating funds. VFC does place a minimum price on the car so as to generate the greatest possible amount for us and the highest possible deduction for our donor. 3. Cars that are either classified as “luxury” cars or ones in need of major repair and otherwise in great condition and newer models. These cars are repaired and sold on our retail lot
