How Many Novels Did Anthony Trollope Write?
Altogether he produced 47 novels, in addition to biographies, travel guides, sketches and short stories. This staggering output was combined with a full-time career working for the General Post Office, not to mention his time-consuming hobbies of travel and hunting (he travelled widely both for pleasure and on business, writing travel books on, among other countries, North America, Australia and South Africa). He was an extremely disciplined writer who always made himself write a set number of words per day (ten pages a day, completed in three hours starting at 5.30 am), and seldom took a break from writing. He even wrote while travelling, and always started a new book as soon as one was finished. In his autobiography Trollope wrote that a novelist should be completely absorbed in his characters; they should be with him at all times, and he should have a deep sense of them as real people.
