Britain has a population roughly three times that of Australia. If they really wanted to compete, therefore, they would need to treble the Australian tally, and they’re not likely to do that. 6th on the list for a population of 20 million is not too shabby! But really, and more importantly, it’s meant to be about individual effort, not a competition between nations – that defeats the whole spirit of the games. That’s the reason the IOC doesn’t even keep an official list of how many medals each country wins.
