How many miscarriages did Catherine of Aragon have?
She has the six pregnancies with 2 stillborns and 3 who died in infancy. Just over 32 weeks after her final birth (stillborn) Henry’s mistress gave birth to a healthy boy. [A normal pregnancy is 38 weeks]. The birth of an illegimate son would have probably solidified Henry’s desire to get an annulment so that he could have a legitimate son. ——- Catherine was not quite 33 years old upon her last pregnancy. She would be age 47 when Henry and Anne Boleyn were publicly married. So there was a long time.
Nobody knows for sure because queens didn’t declare pregnancy until 3 mths gestation and if they lost the pregnancy before the official time of going into seclusion(8 months) it often wasn’t recorded. The total of six is pretty reliable when it comes to officially notified pregnancies, but in Catherine’s case there must have been some health reason, either hers or Henry’s or possibly both, why there was such a succession of disasters – in which case it may have been that there were others. The lady had a terribly sad life…..
