My 1997 Avalon XL has 275,000 miles as of Jan 23, 2009. It has never had a major repair. It has never left me stranded on the road. Timing belt and oil changed per schedule. It is ready for the 3rd cat back exhaust. I replaced the heater blower motor a couple of months ago. Everything on this car still works. It has had some minor electrical issues with the alarm system. I would drive this car cross country and back with no hesitation. Definitely the best, most reliable car I have owned (I am 54). The car still gets 24-30 mpg, uses no oil. I am waiting for it to just stop one day, but that doesn’t seem likely. I just bought my wife a new Avalon XLS and expect to have similar results, though it is quite a bit more complicated than the 1997 version.
