Well, we can’t give you an exact number, because new species of ocean animals are being discovered by scientists every day! We are still a long way from knowing everything about the ocean – it was only in 1977 that deep sea hydrothermal vents were discovered on the ocean floor -scientists discovered thousands of animals that had never been seen before. Frederick Grassle and Nancy Maciolek wrote an article in the American Naturalist in 1992 that estimated that there may be as many as 10 million different kinds of organisms (animals, plants and bacteria) in the ocean!!
