A mother and son from Shandon died Friday morning on Highway 46 after a Delano driver slammed into the rear of their vehicle and sent them careening into oncoming traffic, where they crashed head-on into a third vehicle. Richard Jung, 21, and his mother, Hyun Kim, 49, died at the scene of the accident from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a report from the Kern County coroner’s office. The crash happened at 10:09 a.m. on Highway 46 in Kern County just one mile east of the San Luis Obispo County line. According to reports from KGET Channel 17, California Highway Patrol officers said a driver from Delano was drunk and speeding when he slammed into the rear of Jung and Kim’s Honda Pilot.
