How many light years does it take to reach the Sun?
A lightyear is a measure of distance, not time. It’s the distance that light would travel in one year, and is commonly used by astronomers to measure how far away objects in space are because miles or kilometers are too small for this purpose — space is just too huge. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second so in one Earth year, light would travel about 6 trillion miles. This is one lightyear. The sun is relatively nearby, much less than a lightyear away. It would take only 8 minutes to get there at the speed of light. You could call this “8 light minutes”. You would use lightyears to measure the distance to the other stars or other deep-space objects. For example, the closest star to us (other than our sun) is about 4 lightyears away.
