How many layers of titanium are on the shuttle?

ANSWER from Andrew Petro on May 15, 2000: There really aren’t any layers of titanium on the Shuttle. The shuttle structure is made mainly of aluminum. The outside surface, on the bottom and forward facing parts (that get very hot) are covered with tiles made of silica material. These tiles are up to four inches thick in some places. The surfaces on the top of the shuttle are covered with heat-resistant blanket material. Return to top.
