A. There is no clarity on this issue. Some have put the figure as low as 7,000. One should note that, in addition to the official figures, There are thousands of second generation Holocaust survivors who have integrated and intermarried over the decades. We have met numerous individuals who were unaware that they were in fact Jewish. North Island: Over 5,000 Auckland Over 3,000 (with two Independent Communities Plus a Shtieble in the Suburb) Wellington: Approx. 2,000 (with two Independent Communities) South Island: Over 2,000 Christchurch: The census bureau has put the number well under a thousand (of individuals who’ve stated to them that they are Jewish). There are approx. 70-80 families who are official members of the local Shul in the City. It is assumed that less than 25% of the Jews the region are official members of the Local Shul.
