How many Irish did Cromwell and his army kill?
It really depends how you’re counting. If we’re talking about those Irish who died directly by the blades or shot of the NMA & its auxilleries the numbers would be in the reason of 20,000 combatants and similar numbers (+/- 50%) of civilians. But war in the 17thC didn’t merely result in people dying in combat. The populations of Irish towns placed under siege suffered terribly as did the wider civilian population displaced or deprived of their agricultural produce by the various roving armies of the Confederate Wars. If these “indirect” losses are taken into account then as many as 300,000 may have died between 1641 when the Irish lords began the revolt & 1653 when parliamentary forces returned the country to order.
