How many hours a week do interns typically work?
The internship tour of duty(TOD) is from 8am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Generally, interns work 40 hours a week and then we hope have a full and balanced life outside of the VA. Interns are not positively reinforced for staying late, completing notes after hours, etc. There are a few exceptions to this statement. As an example, an intern might select a rotation that has an evening group, then a TOD for that day of the week might be from 1pm to 9pm. For a few rotations, there might be an urgent clinical issue, requiring an intern to stay for up to an hour after their scheduled TOD. For some interns, a rotation will include significant new information that will require reading or research, above and beyond the 40 hour week. However, we generally want an intern to complete their work during their scheduled TOD and enjoy all that Salt Lake City and environs has to offer.
