How many hours a day do the astronauts have to train?
ANSWER from Mike Hembree on April 9, 1997: The training time depends on how close the astronauts are to their launch date. The typical shuttle crew starts training for their mission about 8 months before they launch. At this time they train around 5-6 hours per day and are able to do other things the rest of the time. The training time increases to about 10-12 hours per day at about 6 weeks before launch. Since we want the crew to be fresh and rested, their training tapers off and completes about 1 week before launch. Return to top.
