asked Daniel Burton Eleven horses have won the American Triple Crown – the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes – in the same year. The last two happened in successive years – Seattle Slew in 1977 and Affirmed in 1978 – although there have been some near-misses since: in 2008 Big Brown won the first two but finished last in the Belmont Stakes, while in 2004 Smarty Jones won the first two but was just pipped in the Belmont. The previous year Funny Cide had won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but came in third in the Belmont. For the record, the other horses which did win all three were Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1948), Citation (1948) and Secretariat (1973).
