How many homeless veterans are there in the area?
Too many. “It appears that we have 472 homeless veterans,” says Jim Belmont, spokesman for the Fayetteville VA Medical Center. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital serves 20 counties in southeastern North Carolina and two in northeastern South Carolina. The 472 homeless veterans figure comes from a recent study done by the hospital’s homeless coordinator for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The number of homeless veterans seen and treated by the Fayetteville-based Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program was 144 in fiscal year 2009, 171 in fiscal year 2008 and 49 in fiscal year 2007. Statewide, the total of homeless veterans treated through the program in fiscal year 2009 was 2,034. The N.C. Coalition to End Homelessness estimates there are 61 homeless veterans in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. The total statewide is 940. The figures do not include veterans staying in transitional housing, meaning the actual number is likely higher. For
