How many gritters does the county council have and how much grit can they spread?
We have 49 front line gritters operating across the county from 11 depots and snow ploughs ready to use if needed. A further 16 gritters provide back-up and an additional resource to treat the Secondary Road Network during incidences of severe winter weather. We will also be working with local farmers and contractors this winter to help us clear snow from minor roads in remote locations. Gritters are used to spread salt across the road surface and once the driver has set the spread rate, it is maintained electronically irrespective of the road speed of the gritter. Spread rates vary between 7.5 grams/m2 for precautionary treatment and up to 40 grams/m2 on deep snow.
