How many grams of whole wheat should an average healthy adult eat a day?
According to the newest USDA Dietary Guidelines and the accompanying Food Guide Pyramid released in 2005, the amount of grains you need to eat depends on your age, sex, and level of physical activity (see www.mypyramid.gov) The following amounts are recommended: Men 19-30 years old – 8 ounces of grain foods per day Men 31-50 years old – 7 ounces of grain foods per day Men 51+ years old – 6 ounces of grain foods per day. Women 19-30 years old 6 ounces of grain foods per day Women 31-50 years old 6 ounces of grain foods per day Women 51+ years old – 5 ounces of grain foods per day In general, 1 slice of bread can be considered as a serving or a 1 ounce equivalent from the grains group. One ounce equals 28 grams. The USDA Dietary Guidelines also recommend that at least half of your daily grain intake should be from whole grains.
