Forget Kevin Bacon. The game is now “Six Degrees of John Thain.” Hank Paulson, who was chief executive when Thain was president of the firm, is now U.S. treasury secretary. Jon Corzine, pushed out by Paulson in 1999, when Thain was CFO, is now the governor of New Jersey. Robert Rubin, Goldman’s co-chairman, who used to be treasury secretary, is interim chairman of Citigroup, leading the search for Prince’s replacement. “Hedge fund land” is littered with former Goldman star traders.
