How many German Shepherd puppies were cloned from Trackr, the heroic World Trade Center rescue dog?
A K-9 dog hailed for 9/11 heroism has been cloned. Scientists said Wednesday they have successfully produced five puppies who are genetic copies of Trackr, who hunted for victims of the World Trade Center terror attacks. The German shepherd died in April at age 16 from a degenerative brain disorder. “Once in a lifetime, a dog comes along that not only captures the hearts of all he touches but also plays a private role in history,” the dog’s owner, James Symington, wrote last year in a winning essay in a contest to find the most “cloneworthy” dog. Symington, a retired cop from Canada, now lives in Los Angeles. He has said he hopes to put the five new dogs to work in search-and-rescue teams. Symington and Trackr were among the first K-9 teams to arrive at Ground Zero. Braving horrific conditions, the pair helped locate the last human survivor of 9/11 under some 30 feet of unstable debris. Sources:
