How many gallons a water softener consumes during a regeneration cycle depends entirely on the size of the softener (how many cubic feet of resin are in the pressure tank), the salt dosage setting, and backwash flow rate and time. On average, a 32K softener (1.0 cubic feet of resin) will require about 50 total gallons of water during a complete regeneration cycle. The great majority of this volume is discharged at a very slow rate during the brine recharge cycle. The initial backwash cycle and final rinse cycle will require less than half of the total volume required. Hope this helps!
