how many fonts does it take to slow win xp down?
waring_abbott, Sorry, it’s been a crazy week here in Florida (some little tropical thing called Ernesto), and I didn’t get to your question as soon as I would have liked. First of all, there’s no set limit for number of fonts in Win95/98/ME. There are functional limits, however: All font files are registered under a single key in the registry and a registry key cannot exceed 64 KB in this product line. You can average the length of font names and font file names which will fit in 64KB, M$ estimates the max as between 1000 and 1500. In addition, the M$ GDI (graphics device interface) for these products contains an internal list of fonts, with 10 KB reserved for font file names. Presumably, if you had a lot of fonts with very short names, you could fit close to 1000 within the 10KB limit. Win NT 4.0 had a 48 MB memory limit for fonts. Win NT with SP3 and Office 2000, with JUST the base fonts installed was already at 20MB of fonts. Fortunately, there’s no functional limit in XP (and Win2K
