How many flakes of hay should i feed my horse?
This is soooo horse specific that I cannot completely answer this. Neither can anyone else online, no matter what they say. If you horse is grazing all day, one flake should be enough at night–2 at the most. You do need to feed grain. Horses get more varied nutrients from this. Again this depends on the horse. A typical pony can do with 1/2 – 1lb of feed, grazing all day, one flake. A large thouroughbred cross may eat 4lbs of feed, 2 flakes, and graze all day. Typical bales have 12 flakes, although this can rarely vary. I would speak to your trainer and vet about your horse’s specific needs. I assist in the care of 17 horses.
