How many fins in my surfboard?
The fin setup of your board depends mainly on two things: how you want your board to feel (loose, tight, stable, etc.) and what your skill level is. The most common fin setup is a thruster, which is a three fin setup used on short to mid length boards. It provides the most consistent feel and is just an all around balanced setup for your fins. It provides good speed and can be adjusted depending on the kind of fins you use. On longboards, many times they have either a single fin, or a single with two trailer fins. This means that the center fin at the back of the board is longer (usually 6″-10″) with a smaller fin on either side about 6″-8″ in front of the center fin along the rails of the board. The distance between the center fin and trailer fins can also play a role in how loose or stable your longboard feels.
