How many female rulers of Egypt were there, like sole rulers?
The first Queen of Egypt to rule in her own right was Nitocris, (c2180 BC) of whom nothing is known except that she came to the throne at a time of political instability on the death of an aged king, Pepi II. Manetho (a late Egyptian historian) says that she was “the noblest and loveliest of the women, of her time” . The Old Kingdom came to an end with the death of Nitocris. It was nearly four hundred years, around 1790 BC, that another Queen Regnant came to the throne of Egypt; she was Sobekneferu. She was the last ruler of the Twelfth Dynasty. After Hatshepsut, there was one more Queen regnant, Twosret of the Nineteenth Dynasty. Nothing is known of her reign but she, like Hatshepsut, was buried in a royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Although these are the only known queens regnant, there were lots of other queens who, although ruling as consorts rather than in their own right, were powerful and influential. Queen Tiy, the Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III was very influential fo
